Sea Lions send seniors off with series victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN DIEGO - The nine seniors on the Point Loma baseball team ended their Sea Lion careers with a series win over Academy of Art as the two teams split Saturday's doubleheader. PLNU picked up its third straight win in the series with an 11-6 victory in the  opener before ART U took the finale 3-2.

The Sea Lions finish the season at 24-25 and sixth in the Pacific West Conference standings with a 15-17 record. ART U ended its season at 12-36 and 7-25 in the PacWest.

Game 1
Things were not looking good early for the Sea Lions as ART U put up four runs in the top of the first, but PLNU responded to the challenge and came all the way back for an 11-6 victory.

Senior pitcher Brett Carlile could not have expected to be called on so early, but he came out of the pen with two outs in the first inning and stopped the Urban Knights' rally before throwing another seven innings to pick up the victory. He pitched 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits and just one run while striking out six to improve to 5-5 on the season.

"I was stoked that Carlile was able to end his career with such a good outing," said PLNU head coach Joe Schaefer. "We didn't expect to go to him that early but for him to go 7+ innings and get us back on track was outstanding. I am glad he was able to close out his career on such a high note."

After spotting ART U four runs in the first, PLNU rallied back with two in their half of the first and then they scored six runs in the third when they batted around. Four different Sea Lions recorded RBI hits in the inning and four of the six runs were unearned thanks to three ART U errors.

PLNU would continue to add runs with one in the fifth on an RBI-single by Matt Jervis and two more in the eighth on a two-out, two RBI-single by Clinton Harwick, which extended Point Loma's lead to 11-5.

Harwick finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and a season-high three runs batted in. The senior from Glendora, Calif., finished his four-year Point Loma career with 196 hits to move past AJ Napier and Alex Cameron into sole possession of eighth place in the PLNU record books.

Fellow senior Tyler Hanzawa scored three runs and drove in another. He reached base in four of his five plate appearances as he had a hit, drew a walk and was twice hit by a pitch. Another senior Mike Marcoux added two hits and two runs scored. However, Marcoux missed out on the RBI party as he was the only one of the nine starters not to knock in a run.

Game 2
Academy of Art scored three runs in second inning and held on through a few Point Loma rallies for a 3-2 win in the series finale.

The Urban Knights got a sacrifice fly, a steal of home and a two-out RBI-single to grab the early lead.

Point Loma chipped away with a run in the bottom of the third. PLNU had runners at second and third after Tyler Nordgren doubled down the left field line when Matt Jervis came to the plate with two out. Jervis came up with the big hit to drive in Harwick for the Sea Lions' first run of the game but Nordgren was thrown out on a close play at the plate to end the inning.

PLNU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Urban Knights' lead to one but they never were able to tie the game.

ART U's Brandon Poulson pitched the final two innings, striking out all six batters he faced for his first save of the season. He saved thed game for Aaron Garabedian who went five innings allowing five hits and two runs (one earned).

Garret Levsen (5-4) pitched well despite taking the loss in his final home game. He went all seven innings for his fifth complete game of the season. He allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out four and walking one.

"He wasn't sharp early but he settled in and competed very well," said Schaefer. "It was just a bummer that they got three early, because he was pretty good the rest of the game. He settled in as the game went along and I wish we could have pushed a few more runs across to get him the win. But he responded very well after a tough second inning to end his career on a high note as well."

The Sea Lions were able to come away with a series win to close out their 2014 campaign which is always an important goal for coach Schaefer's team.

"You set out each weekend in conference to win the series," said Schaefer. These guys did a good job out here competing today. We wanted to come away with the sweep and a winning record on the season but it didn't work out in our favor that second game.

"It was good to see the guys having fun with so much on the line this weekend," continued Scahefer. "The guys were enjoying the game and competing. It is what we have tried to get them to do all year, and we were able to see it on the last weekend of the year."

It was a very memorable weekend for all the seniors including Tyler Nordgren who moved into a tie for sixth on the Sea Lions' single-season list with his 18th double of the season.

"All the seniors had a part in the season and the series this weekend," Schaefer explained. " They have been around for quite a while and all have contributed over the course of their careers. It will be tough to see those guys go, but I am glad that they all went out on a good note individually, save the result of the final game. They all had good seasons and good series and we are proud of them all."

Coach Schaefer was also excited about what lays in store for the future of Sea Lion baseball.

"I thought this year was a step in the right direction for this program, and although the record did not reflect the progress, we had a lot of guys battle through injuries and position changes," Schaefer said. "There is a lot of promise out of this program with all the talented younger players that gained experience for us this year. Our seniors helped get us to where we are, and where we are going, but I am also very optimistic about the future."
