MOMENT #9: WOMEN'S BASKETBALL'S WIN AT AZUSA

7/20/2021 2:00:00 PM

Moment #9: At the moment no one realized what a big win it would be, but women's basketball's victory at Azusa Pacific turned out to be one of the most impressive victories of the 2020-21 campaign for any Point Loma team. The Sea Lions overcame a seven-point halftime deficit, and multiple leads by APU in the fourth quarter, to defeat the eventual NCAA West Regional champions on the road 93-91. Freshman Ellie Turk came off the bench to score a career-high 26 points to lead all scorers, including 10 in the fourth quarter. She hit 9-of-16 shots from the field and 8-of-10 attempts from the free throw line.

PLNU used a 33-point third quarter to take a one-point lead into the final period. Jumpers by Alix Henderson, Ellie Turk, and Cara Liggins gave PLNU its largest advantage of the game at 90-85 with just 40 seconds remaining. After the jumpers, Alex Lowden answered with a 3-pointer to bring the Cougars back within two points before Ellie Turk pushed the lead back to four with a pair of free throws. APU's Kayla Shaw proceeded to hit a deep 3-pointer to bring the lead back to one (92-91) with 10 seconds remaining. Liggins was then fouled and hit one of two free throws and Azusa had the chance to tie or win the game in the final seconds. The Sea Lions' defense was ready for the challenge though, and it shut down all the looks from behind the arc before Lowden missed the game-tying shot from the elbow. The win moved PLNU's record to 5-1 and into the national rankings.
