2021-22 TOP MOMENTS #3: SOCCER STREAKS

8/3/2022 3:24:00 PM

Editor's Note: As fall sports athletes start returning to campus later this week, signaling the start of a new athletic season, we take a look back at the top moments of 2021-22.

PLNU Men's and Women's Soccer teams dominated the pitch last season, both recording double-digit wins and tallying notable streaks along the way.

Women's Soccer has been a dominating force in the PacWest since Head Coach Kristi Kiely became head coach before the 2018 season. Since Kiely's arrival, the Sea Lions have gone 31-1-3 in conference play, with a loss to Hawaii Hilo last season snapping PLNU's PacWest record 34-match conference unbeaten streak dating back to 2017.

That loss marked the only conference defeat for the Sea Lions (13-2-2 overall, 9-1 PacWest), who secured a shared regular season PacWest championship, the team's third conference title in a row. PLNU went on to beat Cal State East Bay in the first round of the NCAA Regional in penalty kicks, before falling to Western Washington by a single goal in the second round.

Eleven players earned All-PacWest honors, with four receiving All-Region recognition. Junior Lauren O'Malley was recognized as PacWest Defender of the Year, as well as First Team All-PacWest and First Team All-Region. Alana Diaz, Hailey Clifford, and Emma Thrapp also added their names to the All-PacWest First Team and were selected to the All-Region Second Team. Naomi Ellis, Courtney Jo Seman and Emma Hinson would each earn All-PacWest second-team honors, with Bethany Arabe, Abby Schmidt, Makenna Herrero and Mara Sovde rounding out the awards with All-PacWest Third Team honors.

Men's Soccer (11-4-1, 8-2 PacWest) didn't allow a goal for over six games as part of a seven-match winning streak that propelled a strong 2021 season. Finishing with a bang, a late overtime goal from Luca Quieroz gave the Sea Lions a golden-goal victory over Concordia in the team's final game. Coach Phil Wolf's team finished second in the conference, the program's highest finish in the PacWest, during a season in which Wolf won his 200th career game as a college coach.

A well-played season landed four Sea Lions on All-PacWest teams, including Parker Scalzo being named PacWest Player of the Year. Scalzo, who was also an All-Region selection, joined Corey Lundeen, Matthew Abangan and Teague Anderson on the All-PacWest First Team. Seth Ketterer earned All-PacWest Third Team honors.
