SAN DIEGO – NAIA No. 8-ranked Point Loma Nazarene split a GSAC doubleheader with visiting Azusa Pacific on Saturday. The Sea Lions won the opener 8-3 and APU took the nightcap 4-0.
PLNU now stands at 11-11 overall, 6-9 in conference play and the Cougars are 15-12, 8-8 GSAC.
Loma first baseman Edgar Molina did much of the damage offensively, busting out five hits in six at bats over the two games. Molina rapped out three hits and drove in four runs in the opener.
The Sea Lions collected 14 hits in the first tilt. Allen Boyer and Scott Stidham had three hits apiece with Tyler Kuehl going 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Tied 1-1 after two and a half innings, Loma pushed across two in the third and then four more in the fourth to go ahead 7-1. The Cougars scored twice in the sixth but it was too-little-too-late.
Jack Archie (3-1) picked up the win for PLNU, going six strong innings on the hill. He allowed three runs on five hits. Kelsen Boyer closed out the game with three solid innings of one-hit ball and earned a save in the process.
Taking the loss was Jacob Cage (3-4). Cage yielded five runs (three earned) in 3.1 frames of work.
The nightcap belonged to APU starter Nolan Rudman (2-1). The Cougar right-hander threw a complete-game despite being nailed on the shin by a comebacker off of Molina's bat. Rudman gave up seven hits but kept the Sea Lions from scoring, thanks in part to seven strikeouts.
PLNU used five pitchers with starter Kenny Houser getting hung with the loss after a four-inning start in which he surrendered two runs.
A scoreless game through three, APU scored twice in the fourth and then twice more in the sixth.
The Sea Lions will be in Fresno on Wednesday to take on the Sunbirds for a GSAC DH that starts at 11:00 am.
