Loma Dishes Out Another Upset

Tenth-ranked Sea Lions top #7 Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- NAIA No. 10 Point Loma Nazarene handed seventh-ranked Vanguard a 5-4 upset loss Wednesday afternoon at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The Sea Lions improved to 5-0 overall, 2-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference and dropped the Lions to 2-6, 1-3 GSAC.

Singles started play and ended in a 3-3 stalemate. First, PLNU's KC Ensley lost at three to Yahor Kryvruchka 6-4, 6-3, before Joel Myers at two evened it up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over VU's Robin Wagner.

No. 5 DJ Jaehnig pushed Loma into the lead after a close 6-4, 7-5 win and No. 4 Diego Tavera strengthened it after splitting sets with Vanguard's Radek Rosiak. Tavera lost the first set 3-6 then won the next 6-0. He finally got the upper hand in the third set, ending it 7-5.

However, Vanguard came back on courts one and six, defeating Sea Lions Tyler Bowman and Mike Zablan, both of whom went to three sets but each losing in the third. Bowman fell 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 and Zablan lost 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

It came down to doubles. Things did not look good for Loma when the Lions No. 1 Lucas Pereira and Robin Wagner beat Myers and Ensley 8-2. Down 4-3 in team points, the Sea Lions rallied on court three where Angel Tavera and Jaenig powered through their match, finishing up with an 8-5 win.

With the score at 4-4, all eyes turned to Diego Tavera and Bowman on court two. The duo came through for Loma, topping Vanguard's Radek Rosiak and Sandro Bucher 8-4.

There is no rest for the weary. PLNU hosts Villanova on Thursday at 2 pm.
