BOX GAME TWO
SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene swept a Golden State Athletic Conference twinbill from visiting Westmont Wednesday afternoon, winning by scores of 14-1 and 7-6.
The two games at Carroll B. Land Stadium couldn't be more opposite of each other. The Sea Lions treated the first nine innings like batting practice, handily defeating the Warriors 14-1. However, the second game of the day didn't go quite as indisputably as the first; Point Loma winning by just a run, 7-6.
The ball was launching off the hot Point Loma bats during the day's 11 o'clock showing. Not one Sea Lion starter was lacking a hit, and the team compiled a total of 18 knocks. The Westmont pitching staff definitely didn't help themselves though, walking 12 batters over 50 plate appearances.
Each of the four Warrior hurlers walked three batters apiece, and each let up at least a run, but the loss went to starter Daniel Cabuling. The left-hander allowed 12 hits and six runs over 3.1 innings and lowered his record to 3-6.
Tyler Kuehl, Scott Stidham, and Shain Stoner all had three hits on the day. Allen Boyer, Kuehl, Stoner, Kyle Gerdts, and Rashad Taylor recorded doubles, while Stoner also homered along with Jack Diamond.
Freshman right-hander Garrett Levsen earned his fourth win of the year after tossing seven innings, allowing just four hits and a lone run. Lefty Josh Dexheimer worked through two scoreless innings on the hill and the Sea Lions coolly took the victory by a lead of 13 runs.
Jackson Archie threw the first pitch of the second game and continued on all the way past the seventh inning. Though not quite as pretty as the first, Archie got the job done, letting up 11 hits and five runs, just three of which were earned.
The Warriors outhit the Sea Lions 14-11, yet a couple of huge homeruns from Edgar Molina and designated hitter Taylor changed things dramatically. The ball game was tied twice—through the first and third innings, and in the top of the fifth Westmont took a 3-2 lead.
Molina's two-run shot allowed Point Loma to finally take the lead in the bottom of the sixth while Taylor's three-run jack by the next inning added some much-needed security runs.
However, the Warriors proved to still have some fight in them in the top of the eighth when facing new pitcher, reliever Chris Gonzalez. The righty staggered through two-thirds of an inning, allowing two inherited runs to score, and one of his own before getting the third out of the frame.
In the ninth, Gonzalez and the Sea Lions toughed it out, winning 7-6, and sweeping the Warriors.
Archie improves his record to 5-1 and Gonzalez recorded his second save of the year.
Point Loma improves to 21-16 overall, 16-13 in GSAC while Westmont drops to 15-24 overall and 7-20 in GSAC.
The Sea Lions will travel to Santa Barbara to be hosted by Westmont for another double header on Saturday at 12 pm.
