Harwick's RBI Completes Comeback

Sea Lions beat Chapman in 10, 5-4

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO – Clinton Harwick came through with a RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Point Loma Nazarene a 5-4 non-conference win over NCAA DIII No. 11 Chapman Thursday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium. Harwick was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the game.

The Sea Lions looked sluggish early and perhaps playing in their sixth game in six six days had something to do with that. Loma quickly fell behind 4-0 after the visiting Panthers plated single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings.

Point Loma, which had just one hit through four innings, began its comeback with two in the home half of the fifth. Shaine Stoner ripped a solo homer over the left field wall for the first Sea Lion run of the frame with Harwick driving in the second on a RBI single.

PLNU threatened for more but Harwick was easily thrown out at the plate after a single to right from Allen Boyer.

The comeback was completed with another two-spot in the seventh. Harwick started that rally with a single to left and then advanced to third on a double from Alec Martinez. Jack Diamond singled to right center to plate Harwick and close the gap to just one. A sac fly from Boyer evened the score at 4-4.

The Sea Lions were primed for a big inning but Chapman reliever Kevin Osaki got Stoner to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

Point Loma had another golden opportunity go up in flames; this time in the bottom of the ninth. The Green and Gold loaded the bases with one out but hit into their fifth double play of the game.

Chapman saw a rally of its own fizzle in the tenth. The Panthers had a runner at third and two outs to work with but Sea Lion reliever Jack Archie fanned the next two batters.

PLNU finally ended the day's competition in the home half of the tenth. Stoner walked to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a one-out hit by Rashad Taylor. Harwick was the next batter and ripped a 1-0 pitch down the left field line to easily plate Stoner from second.

It was only the second in 16 times that the Sea Lions won after trailing past the sixth inning this year. What makes Thursday's comeback more impressive is the fact that CU was outhitting PLNU 10-1 going into the bottom of the fifth.

Archie (6-1) earned the win after a scoreless tenth inning on the hill. Houser lasted five innings with Maurice Wilhelm toeing the rubber for four shut out frames.

The fourth Panther hurler of the day, Ben Levitt, was hung with the loss.

Four Sea Lions had two hits: Boyer, Taylor, Tyler Kuehl and Scott Stidham.

The Sea Lions improved to 26-17 with the win and dropped Chapman to 23-9.

Point Loma has a few days off before starting a regular-season ending, four-game series with first place California Baptist. The first two contests are Wednesday and Thursday in Riverside. Both games start at 3:00 pm. The two squads wrap up things with a twin-bill in San Diego next Saturday.
