BOX GAME TWO
SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene and The Master's split a GSAC doubleheader at Carroll B. Land Stadium Saturday. The Mustangs scored five runs in the ninth en route to a 5-3 win in game one while Allen Boyer clubbed a walk-off homer in PLNU's 2-1 game two win.
Before today, TMC was 0-16 when trailing after the sixth inning. That statistic changed during the ninth inning on Saturday's opener. The Mustangs scored five runs on five hits, including a grand slam and an RBI single to steal the victory from the Sea Lions, 5-3.
Though Point Loma outscored the Mustangs by a total of 14 runs in their first two games of the series, things were much more competitive Saturday. While the Sea Lions were winning until the ninth inning, they were definitely dodging bullets in the form of 13 Mustang hits, and in the end, it came back to bite them. Loma only recorded five hits in the loss.
Sophomore transfer Jack Archie started on the hill, making his ninth appearance of the year. Though The Master's came out swinging hard, the right-hander from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, safely got out of every bad situation he may have gotten himself into. Leadoff hitter Tanner Leighton hit the ball off the right field wall to start things off—a foot higher and it would have been over the fence. While Leighton thought it would be a stand-up double, Jack Diamond knew better, and threw him out at second base.
Point Loma was the first to score in the bottom of the second when catcher Alec Martinez drew a walk from lefty Daniel Shaeffer. Freshman Clinton Harwick hit a shot that fell just right of the line in the left field corner to score courtesy runner Kendall Konopka. After that run, no one scored again until the eighth inning.
Archie held the Mustangs to no runs over six innings—his success due in big part to a few very important plays. Though JT Adams reached on a fielding error to start the fourth inning, Archie gave up a single and hit a batter to load up the bases. A strike out, pop up, and fly out to Boyer in center got him safely out of it.
The Mustangs had another big scoring opportunity in the sixth when Archie put runners on first and second. Left fielder Rashad Taylor made a huge catch to get out of hot water.
Left-hander Josh Dexheimer cruised through a couple scoreless innings on the mound, while Boyer and Tyler Kuehl smacked back-to-back round-trippers in the eighth to add some much needed security runs.
Entering the ninth inning, the Sea Lions were leading 3-0, and that's when things went south. Closer Maurice Wilhelm has been usually very successful in tough situations but wasn't able to get the job done today. A walk, single, single, strike out, and a single through the right side scored one run. With bases loaded, Mustang pitcher and designated hitter Adams lifted a shot over the right field fence for a grand slam, and gave the Mustangs a two-run lead. Adams picked himself up as he previously let up the back-to-back homers in the eighth.
Chris Gonzalez came in to relieve Wilhelm and finished the inning—but the damage had been done. Freshman Mustang hurler James Scott came in and struck out the Sea Lion side in the bottom of the ninth to earn a save.
Wilhelm was hung with the loss, and is now 2-1. Adams earned the win, improving his record to 2-4, while Scott recorded his fifth save of the year.
A walk-off homerun from Boyer in the eighth inning gave Point Loma a 2-1 victory in the nightcap. The center fielder went 3-for-4 in the win.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Kenny Houser started on the mound for the Sea Lions and let up a run on two outs. Point Loma struck right back in the bottom, however, when Kuehl singled, stole second, and scored on Shain Stoner's single.
The Sea Lions never really got an opportunity to score again until the bottom of the fifth when Boyer hit a two-bag shot to right center. Konopka attempted to score from first base but was thrown out at home by Mustang right fielder Spencer Downs.
Another two scoreless, quick innings ensued, forcing the game into extra innings. The Mustangs were unable to score in the top of the eighth, which brought Boyer up as the leadoff hitter for the Sea Lions. On the first pitch, the senior blasted a shot over the right field fence—his second of the day—and was met by a cleared bench at the foot of home plate.
Kenny Houser threw a two-hit complete game with seven strike outs and earned his third win of the year. Mustang hurler AJ Work lowered his record to 5-3.
Point Loma took three games out of four of their season series with TMC. They are now 19-15 overall, 14-13 GSAC. The Mustangs are 20-19, 11-15 in GSAC.
The Sea Lions will travel to University of San Diego on Tuesday for a non-conference game at 3:00 pm.
