IRVINE, Calif. -- The Sea Lions were swept for the first time in 2011 on Tuesday in the CU Arena, where conference foe Concordia University owned the night (21-25, 18-25, 18-25).
NAIA No.7-ranked Point Loma is fresh off an upsetting five-set loss to longtime rival Fresno Pacific, which tainted the team's perfect 9-0 record. Before then, the Sea Lions (9-2) also happened to be 1-0 in conference play. After tonight, the team's GSAC record quickly drops to 1-2.
The Eagles are ranked at No.3 and thanks to a team hitting percentage of .287 over the Sea Lions' slim .119, Concordia was able to extinguish the once-hot Loma squad in three.
Neither of the team's biggest hitters, freshman Taylor Lane or senior Tabitha Henken were able to break a .200 hitting percentage, but most others were well below .200 and some hit in the negatives.
Sophomore Alyssa Dwyer managed to shine through the shadows, however, carrying the team with 10 kills on 20 swings. Though Henken has seen better days, the 6-foot-2 outside hitter still contributed nine kills while young Lane also recorded eight for the team.
The scores are proof that the Sea Lions weren't completely out of control—the two teams were by no means unevenly matched. However, Point Loma's 20 attack errors compared to Concordia's 13 speaks volumes. Especially when the Eagles outhit the Sea Lions by 12 kills. Do the math, and you can see how the Sea Lions lost this GSAC match.
Lane helped herself defensively also, with 10 digs. Nicole Eiler recorded 16 ups as well while Aimee Bird had 19 assists.
Concordia's Reanna Schelhass was 7-for-9 while China native Fei Gao swung 12-for-24. The Eagles (14-1) are now 3-0 in conference play, alongside Biola and Fresno Pacific.
The Sea Lions will travel to Azusa Pacific on Saturday for a match at 3 pm.
