COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Sea Lion volleyball's set of sweeps on Saturday in Costa Mesa improves Point Loma's record to 4-0 under new coach Sarah Gustin. Both matches, with Menlo and Holy Names, were won in three sets apiece, proving that the Green and Gold came ready to win.
The No.12-ranked Sea Lions first defeated Menlo in the morning (25-23, 25-21, 25-12). Though the Oaks were able to come within a few points during the first two sets, the 13-point-margined third showed that Point Loma was ready to seal the deal and finish strong.
The 25-23 score of the first set proved to be a close one, but the Sea Lions kept a solid pace throughout the entire game, usually ahead. Thanks to Tabitha Henken attacks and Natalie Hamill assists, Loma was able to pull it out and get the first win, which would set the tone for the rest of the match.
Slowly the Green and Gold began to make the scoring margin larger with each game, ultimately ending with a 13-point lead. Henken posted an over-.500 average, with 10 kills on just 19 attempts. Alyssa Dwyer also added 10 on just 17 attempts. Nicole Eiler had 15 digs while Destiny McIntyre and Delaney McCraney combined for seven blocks at the net. Menlo's Stephanie Monderine was big for the Oaks with 15 kills while Courtney Calicdan had nine.
It seemed like the Sea Lions may have had a case of the "first set jitters" as they outscored Holy Names by just two points during the opening of the second match. Like the previous one, they also gradually outscored their opponent by more every set, finishing with a nine point lead in the end (27-25, 25-21, 25-16).
After trailing 15-22, Point Loma made a huge comeback that started with a service error from Holy Names' Samantha Miller. From there, it snowballed. The Sea Lions scored five unanswered points. Then tied up the score at game point with a Henken kill. Eiler's service ace and an attack error from Holy Names' Miller put Point Loma on top.
After the dramatic first set, the Sea Lions seemed to settle down and handily take the following two. Henken had another 20 kills and Dwyer added 10 more. Eiler had 21 ups while Taylor Lane had 19 and Henken played just as good defense as offense with 12 digs of her own.
The Sea Lions will host the Seaside Invitational next Friday and Saturday with the team's first contest against Malone (Ohio) at 4:30 p.m.
