Penguins rally to upset Sea Lions

[Box score]

SAN DIEGO--
Dominican rallied back from a two sets to one deficit to stun Point Loma on Saturday afternoon in Golden Gymnasium, 16-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 15-11.

With the win, the Penguins improved to 7-18 on the season, to 5-11 in the Pacific West Conference and they snapped a six-match losing streak in the process. The upset loss dropped PLNU to 10-16 on the year and to 6-10 in conference play.

Jessica Jones had 17 kills to pace the visitor's attack, while Sari Kwan had 30 digs to lead the Penguins' defense. Hannah Stocking added 12 kills and Ashlee Sand had 11. PLNU was led by Delaney McCraney's 20 kills while Kelli LeClair chipped in 15. Heather Leavitt had 13 and mcKensey Wise added 12 for the Sea Lions, who were playing in their last home match and last PWC encounter of the year.

PLNU dominated the first set, never trailing on their way to a 25-16 win. But the Penguins controlled much of set #2 including scoring the final three points to win 25-23. The third set was all Point Loma after they jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back (25-18).

In the fourth set, Dominican erased a 7-3 PLNU lead with seven consecutive points and then led for most of the match-tying game (25-21). The fifth set saw the Penguins rush out to a 5-1 margin and they would never trail, although PLNU got to within one point (10-11) on a LeClair kill. But DU responded by scoring four of the next five points to cement the match.

The loss spoiled Senior Day for PLNU's two graduating players--Natalie Hamill and Nicole Eiler. Hamill had a strong showing though with a career-best 57 assists. Eiler led PLNU with 21 digs and now has a career total of 1,927, just 30 shy of the school record.

The Sea Lions will wrap up their 2012 season with a non-conference match on Tuesday at #1 nationally ranked (NAIA) Concordia. Start time is 7 p.m.
