Long Day For Loma

Sea Lions swept by Westmont 8-2, 5-4

box game one | box game  two

SAN DIEGO – Visiting Westmont swept Point Loma Nazarene in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Carroll B. Land Stadium Saturday, 8-2 and 5-4. The two losses drop the Sea Lions to 11-14 on the year, 4-8 GSAC.

Even after splitting two contests at Westmont earlier this week, the Sea Lions entered the twinbill with 14 wins in the last 16 meetings against their rivals from Santa Barbara. Recent history didn't mean much to the Warriors who pounded out 21 hits Saturday.

Pitcher/DH Timothy Leary led the Westmont outburst in game one by going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, two homeruns, two runs scored and five RBI. On the mound, the 6-8, 270 pound right-hander earned the win after allowing just one run on six hits in six innings. Leary (2-3) fanned seven batters and walked two.

Westmont scored twice in the first, once in the second, twice in the third and one more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Leary hit his first homer during that stretch with teammates Coby Cress and David Gable also going yard.

The only run by the Sea Lions at that point was a solo shot from catcher Ricky Gingras. WC added two more in the sixth off of Leary's second blast of the day.

PLNU outfielder Bryan Burkhead singled home the game's final run in the ninth.

Sea Lion starter Tyler Garkow (2-4) suffered the loss, yielding six runs in 3.2 innings. Josh Dexheimer gave up the final two Warrior runs, the lefty toeing the rubber for 3.1 frames. Nolan Stouder impressed with two hitless innings of relief.

Mitch Crocker took the ball for the Warriors and threw three effective innings to close out the conference tilt, getting the save in the process.

Lucas DiCiccio was 3-for-4 for PLNU with Gingras and Hunt each collecting two hits.

Westmont kept up the offensive surge in the nightcap, plating three runs in the team's second at-bat. David Pennington rapped out a two-run single in the frame with Hunter Christensen driving in the other run.

WC took a 4-0 lead after pushing across another run in the top of the fourth. The Sea Lions climbed back into the game with two runs of their own in the home half of the frame. Gingras started the comeback with a solo homer. Trey Hunt later doubled and scored on a single from DiCiccio.

Marcus Heisner reached base on a hit-by-pitch to start the fifth. Tyler Hanzawa followed with a sac bunt. Warrior starter Geoff Rocha attempted to get Heisner at second on the bunt but his throw was late, allowing both runners to reach safely. Clinton Harwick then coaxed a walk to load the bases.

PLNU's golden opportunity yielded just one run though, that coming on a 6-4-3 double play. Burkhead lined out to center to end the inning.

Westmont (11-12-1, 6-6 GSAC) got one of those runs back in the sixth when Jarratt Rouse laid down a two-out, run-scoring bunt.

Garrett Levsen (0-4) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Garrett Gooding was on the mound for two frames, the southpaw allowing one run.

Rocha (2-3) picked up the win for Westmont with four innings pitched. Taylor Martin threw two hitless innings of relief before handing the ball to closer Michael Kwan in the seventh.

That's when the game got very interesting – and especially heartbreaking for Point Loma.

Kwan walked Sea Lion DH Tyler Nordgren to start the inning, later uncorking a wild-pitch to put pinch-runner Daniel Hernandez on second. Heisner was hit by a pitch and Hanzawa walked to load the bases, but not after another wild pitch from Kwan.

That was enough for Westmont Coach Robert Ruiz. He replaced Kwan with Crocker in the middle of the Hanzawa at-bat. Crocker got Harwick to fly out to shallow rightfield for the first out but the Sea Lion inning really unraveled due to poor decisions.

On the fly ball, pinch-runner Eddie Roberts, who was on second, assumed Hernandez would try to score from third and headed to the next base. Hernandez was held up, however, and Roberts was thrown out trying to get back to second.

Crocker intentionally walked Gingras to load the bases again. With two outs, Burkhead smacked a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Hernandez from third. Hanzawa raced towards home from second base as well. Instead of scoring the tying-run, Hanzawa was thrown out at the plate on a perfect strike from Cress in rightfield to end the game.

Crocker picked up his second save of the year on his escape act.

The Sea Lions will try to get back on track when they host defending national champions Concordia (CA) for two on Friday, March 16. The first game is scheduled to start at 11:00 am.
