COSTA MESA, Calif. – NAIA No. 6 ranked Point Loma Nazarene was defeated 6-3 on Tuesday by seventh-ranked conference rivals Vanguard. The loss puts Loma at 12-8 overall this season with a 7-5 record in the GSAC. The Lions bumped up to 11-9 overall, 5-5 GSAC.
The Sea Lions began singles play behind, losing two of the three doubles points. Loma's No. 1 team of Greg De Andrade and
Diego Tavera were beaten 8-4 by Yahor Kryvaruchka and Roger Muri.
Tyler Bowman and Mike Zablan came a little closer but still lost 8-5 to Robin Wagner and Lukas Larsson on three. The lone doubles win for PLNU came from
KC Ensley and
Angel Tavera on court two. The Green and Gold team won a close 9-8 match over Lucas Pereira and Radek Rosiak.
In singles both Zablan and
Chad Rubin came through with wins for Point Loma on courts four and six respectively. Zablan defeated Wagner 6-2, 6-0 while
Chad Rubin split sets with Rosiak. Rubin went down big 6-0 in the first, before rallying to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-1.
The rest of the Sea Lions were overcome by the Lions in straight sets. Bowman fell 6-4, 6-3 to Pereira on one; De Andrade was topped in two 6-2 sets by Muri on two; Ensley came up short against Kryvaruchka, losing 6-3, 6-4 on three and
Diego Tavera lost 6-3, 6-1 on court five to Larsson.
PLNU has a chance to redeem the outcome tomorrow (Wednesday) when the team hosts Vanguard on their home courts. Play begins at 2 pm.
