WHAT'S HAPPENING:
The Point Loma men's basketball team will travel to Phoenix on Saturday, Jan. 19th to take on Grand Canyon at 2:15 p.m. (PST), in a Pacific West Conference battle.
FOLLOW ALONG:
XTRA Sports 1360 AM will go on the road this week to bring fans the radio broadcast of Point Loma vs. Grand Canyon. The broadcast will start 15 minutes prior to tipoff with the pregame show. A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
Point Loma is currently 3-10 on the season and still looking for its first win in conference play (0-6). The Sea Lions allow just 56.6 points per game to lead the PacWest in scoring defense, by over nine points a contest. PLNU is also atop the conference rankings in field goal percentage defense (.390) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (.280).
Taylor Wetherell has stepped up at the point guard position since the calendar changed to 2013. In four games he is averaging 10.5 points, 3.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. He is also shooting 50 percent (10-of-20) from long range.
Trevor Peterson has also stepped up as a scoring option from outside for PLNU since rejoining the team six games ago. He is averaging 7.2 points and has hit at least two treys in each of the past four contests.
Todd Campbell leads the team with 7.6 ppg.
AJ Ussery paces the squad in rebounds (6.1) and assists (2.5).
A LOOK AT GRAND CANYON:
The 'Lopes are 14-4 on the season and in third place in the PacWest conference with a 5-2 record. GCU had won 13 straight games before recently dropping a pair of road games to Dixie State (71-66) and Fresno Pacific (83-68). Joshua Lowery leads the team with 12.8 ppg and 3.4 assists. Killian Larson is second on the team with 11.4 ppg. He also leads the team with 7.9 rebounds. The 'Lopes are averaging 71.6 ppg on the season. They are second in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 65.8 ppg. They also pace the PacWest in free throw percentage (.754) and are fourth in field goal percentage defense (.417).
This is the second meeting of the season between PLNU and GCU. The first came Jan. 5 in San Diego when Grand Canyon came away with a 63-51 win. The 'Lopes capitalized on strong shooting from the outside, by knocking down 10 3-point baskets and outscoring PLNU by 21 points from behind the arc. Braylon Pickrell led GCU with 17 points.
Arren Wells paced Point Loma with 11 points, and
Todd Campbell added 10 on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting.
NEXT UP:
Point Loma will return home after the contest to host Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 7:00 p.m. This will be the second meeting of the season between the Cougars and the Sea Lions. Cal State San Marcos squeaked out a 51-46 win in the opener.
