Point Loma athletic alumni update

Here is an update on a few Point Loma alumni that have continued their athletic careers beyond college:

Sam Cyr: men's golf, 2006-09
Cyr played in four tournaments, including three on the Asian Tour, in November and December. Cyr began November at the PGA Tour qualifying school. He shot a 3-under, 285 in the second stage of q-school but missed advancing by two strokes. Cyr's first event on the Asian Tour was the King's Cup. He finished tied for 26th with an 11-under, 277. He would go on to compete in the Thailand Golf Championships and the Johor Open in Malaysia before taking a break for the holidays. Cyr now plans to return to q-school and improve his status on the tour.

Since leaving PLNU and joining the tour, Cyr has three wins in his pro career; the 2010 Mid-Pacific Open, the 2011 Hawaii State Open and the 2011 Maui Open. In 2012 his best finish came at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters when he tied for ninth with a 5-over, 293. Cyr was a two-time NAIA National Champion for the Sea Lions.

Joe Prince: men's golf, 2004-06
Prince was recently named an assistant coach with the Arizona State men's golf program. Prince, who recently worked as an assistant at the University of San Diego and California Baptist, joined the Sun Devils' staff on Jan. 10. He will coach alongside Tom Mickelson, brother of legendary PGA member Phil, for one of the top programs in the nation.

Prince played golf for the Sea Lions from 2004-06 where he majored in managerial and organizational communications. He was a two-time All-American and won the NAIA National Championship in 2006. Following his collegiate career at Point Loma, Prince turned pro and played on the U.S. Pro Golf Tour, the Gateway Tour and the Golden State Tour. In 2008, he won the Oak Valley Championship and finished ninth on the Golden State Tour money list. He posted six top-5 finishes during the season. He began his coaching career at PLNU as a volunteer assistant coach.

Mike Ekstrom: baseball, 2004
Ekstrom has signed a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics for the 2013 season. The right-hander will receive an invitation to Spring Training. Ekstrom pitched 15 2/3 innings out of the Colorado Rockies' bullpen last season.

Ekstrom, who pitched for PLNU in 2004, has spent parts of five seasons in Major League Baseball with three franchises. He began his career in San Diego, before moving onto Tampa Bay for two seasons and Colorado last year. His best season came in 2010 when he appeared in 15 games out of the bullpen for the Rays. He had a 3.31 earned run average and opponents hit just .214 off him as Ekstrom allowed only 12 hits in 16.1 innings.

Tabitha Henken: volleyball, 2008-11 and Greg Murray: men's basketball, 2008-12
Tabitha and Greg were married last July. The couple is now overseas in Israel where Greg continues to play basketball professionally. He is playing for Hapoel Kiryat Tivon of the Israeli League and averaging 21.5 points and 7.7 rebounds. He is shooting 63 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range.

Aimee Bird: volleyball, 2010-11
Bird will take her shot to play volleyball professional when she heads to Europe later in January. Bird, a setter from the Sea Lions from 2010-11, will try out for a professional contract. Bird is eighth in school history with 1,606 assists.

Colleen Planeta: women's basketball, 2006-10
Planeta has continued her basketball career professionally overseas. In 2010-11 she played for Barcelos-Mendanha Sousa in Portugal and averaged 21.4 points, 12 rebounds and 3.5 blocks over 11 games. Planeta then received a contract from DAS Ano Liosia in Greece for the 2011-12 season. In 20 games she averaged 20.3 ppg and 10 rpg. She also led the league with 2.0 blocks per game. She is currently playing with Saarlouis in Germany for the 2012-13 season. She is averaging 18.3 ppg and 9.4 rpg while helping her team start the season 12-0.

Planeta played for PLNU from 2006-10. She was a two-time first team All-American selection and the Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year. She is still ranked second in school history with 2,014 career points and first with 433 blocks.

Xavier Lopez: men's basketball, 2005-07
Lopez continues his playing career over seasons with Leyma Basquet Coruna in the Spanish League. He is averaging 5.2 ppg while shooting 53 percent from the field and 42 percent from long range. This is the sixth team in the Spanish League for Lopez who has also had stops with Avila, L'Hospitalet, CB Tarragona, Rosalia and Gescrap BB.

Ricky Gingras: baseball, 2012
Gringas was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 18th round of the MLB Amateur Draft last season. He was sent to Astros' rookie team at Greeneville in the Appalachian League. He drove in 17 runs for the Astros in 29 games played.
