SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team improved to 12-1 this season at home with a four-set, 25-22, 25-27, 25-16 and 25-19, victory over Chaminade on Friday, Nov. 8.
With the win and a loss by California Baptist tonight, the Sea Lions regains sole possession of second place in the Pacific West Conference standings at 14-3 (21-6). They trail No. 4 BYU-Hawaii by two matches heading into tomorrow's contest after the Seasiders swept Cal Baptist on Friday. The loss snaps a four-match winning streak for Chaminade (9-13, 6-11 PacWest).
Three Sea Lions registered double-doubles in the win including
Heather Leavitt who had a match-high 18 kills to go along with 18 digs.
Kelli LeClair added 13 kills and matched a season-high with 22 digs. She also paced the Sea Lions with a .324 hitting percentage.
Savannah Wedemeyer dished out 54 assists in the four sets and also added 12 digs. Middle blocker
Alyssa Dwyer also came through with 17 kills and six blocks for the Sea Lions.
Kim Spring had 14 kills and 16 digs to pace the Silverswords in both categories.
PLNU outhit CUH .235 to .135 in the match and outblocked them 10-6. The Sea Lions also came up with 82 digs and six service aces in the match.
"A win is a win, and it is always good to get one," said Point Loma head coach Sarah Gustin. "I think we are continuing to battle ourselves sometimes. We make so many errors, and a lot are unnecessary errors. We need to really focus on that and take care of the ball on our side and good things should happen."
The Sea Lions will be back on their home floor tomorrow for one of their toughest challenges of the season when No. 4 BYU-Hawaii comes to Golden Gymnasium for a 5:00 p.m. match.
