SAN DIEGO -
Heather Leavitt had 15 kills and
Kelli LeClair added 14 of her own to lead the Point Loma volleyball team to a three-set sweep of Dominican (CA), 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22, en route to matching their win total from the 2012 season.
It took just 13 matches this season for Point Loma to match its 10 wins from 2012. The Sea Lions now stand at 10-3 on the year and 4-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The loss sends the Penguins to their 10th straight defeat. They are now 1-11 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.
LeClair had her perhaps her best match of the season with 14 kills and just one error in 40 swings as she posted a .325 hitting percentage. She also had 19 digs for her sixth double-double of the season and added a match-high three service aces.
"I'm happy Kelli is back," said PLNU head coach Sarah Gustin with a smile on her face. "She had been struggling a bit offensively, but we still see it in practice and it just clicked in today. The last couple matches she had been doing better and better, and then tonight she just had a great match. We know she is capable of it and we are just happy she is becoming more consistent."
Leavitt paced PLNU in both kills and digs with 15 and 21, respectively. She now has a team-leading seven double-doubles on the season.
Savannah Wedemeyer improved upon her assist average as she handed out 37 helpers in the three sets. She also added 12 kills.
The Sea Lions' greatest advantage came on their defense at the net. They outblocked the Penguins 8.5-2.0, including four solo blocks.
mcKensey Wise paced Point Loma with four assisted blocks and Leavitt added two solo stuffs.
"(Blocking) has been a focus of ours all year," said Gustin. "We knew after seeing Dominican last week that they were going to try and tool us as much as they could. Their hitters are very good at it so we focused this week in making sure we had a disciplined block up and it worked."
This was the second time in eight days Point Loma and Dominican had faced off. PLNU opened conference play there last Thursday (Sept. 19) with a five-set win before returning to San Diego to face Dominican in its home opener.
PLNU did not look its sharpest during the opening set but was able to prevail 25-21. The second set saw 10 tied scores and six lead changes but the Sea Lions played their best set to win 25-19 and take a two set lead. In the third set, PLNU found itself down 21-19 before rallying to score five of the final six points to close out the match with a three-set sweep.
"Our first two weekends we played Cal State Dominguez Hills and that did not go well. It is just a mental part of the match and we knew what to suspect coming in and as long as we came ready to play we knew we'd be alright."
The Sea Lions will see another PacWest foe for the second time in a week when Holy Names comes to town for a showdown on Saturday starting at 5:00 p.m.
