Volleyball sweeps Holy Names for fifth straight win

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team improved to 5-0 in the Pacific West Conference and to 6-0 at Golden Gymnasium with a 25-16, 25-17 and 25-21 sweep of Holy Names on Saturday, Sept. 28.

This was the second time in a week that the Sea Lions have earned a three-set victory over the Hawks (0-12, 0-5 PacWest). PLNU (11-3) now stands tied for first place in the PacWest conference with California Baptist and Azusa Pacific at 5-0.

Kelli LeClair continued her fantastic weekend on Saturday against HNU. She registered a team-high 12 kills and just two errors for a .303 hitting percentage. She also had a match-best four aces and just missed another double-double as she recorded nine digs.

"I am really happy with Kelli's performance for the weekend," explained PLNU head coach Sarah Gustin. "She is showing why she was an All-American last year and a preseason All-PacWest selection. I am glad she is finding her rhythm because we need her to do that in order to beat the tougher teams."

The key for the Sea Lions throughout the evening was their defense. They held the Hawks to just a .067 hitting percentage, which included just 23 kills and 16 errors in the three sets.

"We had a really good game plan against their offense," said Gustin. "Our defenders were in the right place and we were able to get quite a few digs from that. Our middles also did well knowing their assignments which made it easier for our defense to be in the right place."

Alyssa Dwyer put together another very dominant performance in the middle. She had nine kills and just two errors to post a team-best .350 hitting percentage. Dwyer and Cayleen Harty each added three assisted blocks, while mcKensey Wise led the Sea Lions with four. Heather Leavitt recorded her eighth double-double in the match with 11 kills and 13 digs. Savannah Wedemeyer matched her total from last night with 37 assists.

However, despite picking up two wins this weekend and five to start conference play coach Gustin says this team must continue to work to achieve the goals it laid out for itself this season.

"The team knows we have the ability to continue to win matches but they know there is some significant things we need to improve on," Gustin added. "We have to be better with our focus and our consistency."

PLNU will have the opportunity to face both the other 5-0 teams next week. It will host Azusa Pacific on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7:00 p.m., and then travel to California Baptist on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a 7:00 p.m. showdown with the Lancers.

"These next week weeks we play all the teams that are undefeated in the PacWest so it will be a very good test for us," concluded Gustin.
