Â
Savannah Wedemeyer spread ball out to all the PLNU (11-6, 8-1 PacWest) hitters, as all five posted eight or more kills. Â
Heather Leavitt had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, and
Bethany Mandon chipped in with 11 kills and a match-best .588 hitting percentage. Wedmeyer finished with 39 assists and five kills. Â
Â
"We were passing really well and defending really well and it allowed Savannah to do her thing," said PLNU head coach
Jonathan Scott. "When she is clicking like she was tonight we have a very good offense."
Â
Point Loma posted its second-best hitting percentage of the season (.390) and the Sea Lions had 52 kills to the Penguins' 18. PLNU also had five of its seven student-athletes hit .368 or better in the match.
Â
The Sea Lions never allowed Dominican (3-14, 1-8 PacWest) into the match. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and never looked back. Dominican never held a lead in the entire match, and the score was tied just once during the three sets.
Â
The Sea Lions posted one of their most dominating sets in school history in the second when they defeated the Penguins 25-4. PLNU hit .448 in the set while holding Dominican to a -.308 hitting percentage. The Penguins also had just one kill in the set and Point Loma posted four blocks.
Â
"All we stressed this match was respecting every point equally and we were able to see that in the second set," Scott noted.
The victory makes the Sea Lions the first team in the PacWest to reach eight wins in conference. PLNU is currently trailing only Dixie State and BYU-Hawaii, who are both 7-0, in the PacWest standings.
Â
Aimee Steinwald led the Penguins with seven kills.
Â
The Sea Lions will have a quick turnaround as they face Academy of Art (8-8, 3-5 PacWest) on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 5:00 p.m.
Â
"We are enjoying this win (over Dominican) but we are already getting into the next match and starting to focus on Academy of Art," said Scott.Â
