Box Score SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team got some retribution against Hawaii Pacific as it avenged a loss earlier this season with a five-set win (25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 22-25 and 15-12) over the Sharks on Wednesday, Nov. 5.
Â
This was the fourth-straight win for the Sea Lions (16-9, 13-4 PacWest) which jumped up to No. 10 in the NCAA West Regional rankings earlier in the day. The victory for PLNU also snapped HPU's six-match winning streak and move the Sea Lions into sole possession of third place in the PacWest standings, one match ahead of Fresno Pacific.
Â
Heather Leavitt matched a season-high with 24 kills and added a career-best 25 digs for the Sea Lions which out-dug HPU 99-84.
Â
"Heather did a good job out there offensively but I was even more impressed with her defense," said Point Loma head coach
Jonathan Scott. "She had one of the best defensive performances I've seen an outside hitter have this year."
Â
Christin Fisher posted her own season-best with 32 digs, while
Delaney McCraney and
Kelli LeClair posted 12 apiece. LeClair also added 11 kills to register her second double-double in the last three matches.
Bethany Mandon also chipped in with 13 kills.
Â
"(Tenacity) has been a theme for us for weeks and weeks," Scott said, "and these last three matches we have really shown that grit."
Â
This match could have swung either way in the third set but Point Loma put together a timely 8-3 run in the middle of the set to break a 14-14 tie and take a 2-1 lead in the match. After HPU answered with a 25-22 win in the fourth set the match moved to the decisive fifth set.
Â
In the fifth, PLNU took control early as it went on top 6-3 and then never let HPU regain the lead. Leavitt had four kills in the fifth set, and LeClair added three.
Pomai Recca led the Sharks with 18 kills. She also added 13 digs. Amanda Moriarty had a match-best 34 digs for HPU.
Â
Point Loma will now prepare to host Chaminade on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m. It will also be 90s Night at Golden Gym so fans are encouraged to wear their Neon, Grunge or other 90s gear to the game. Prizes will be awarded for best individual and group costumes.
Â
"This Chaminade team has had some really tough losses and they are way better than their record," Scott explained. "They obviously beat us a couple weeks ago and we cannot take them lightly."Â
