Box Score SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team completed a perfect Pacific West Conference season at home with an 18-25, 25-12, 25-23 and 25-23 win over Hawaii Hilo on Saturday, Nov. 8.
PLNU (18-9, 15-4 PacWest) finishes its 2014 PacWest home schedule unscathed at 10-0, and has not lost a PacWest match at home since 2013. Overall Point Loma was 13-1 at home this season. The loss dropped the Vulcans to 9-13 on the season and to 8-11 in the PacWest.
"We've certainly had a lot of confidence at home," PLNU head coach
Jonathan Scott explained. "I don't think it is truly a home court advantage. I just think we are able to be more prepared and have better execution in these matches."
One area the Sea Lions were able to see that execution excel was the connection between setter
Savannah Wedemeyer and middle blocker
Bethany Mandon. Mandon continued her breakout week with 18 kills and no errors. She hit .545 and also had five blocks. Wedmeyer had 52 assists in the four sets while also adding six kills and no errors.
"We don't win that match if Bethany doesn't get every one of those kills," explained Scott. "She stepped up in time we really needed it."
Defensively
Christin Fisher led five Sea Lions in double-figure digs with 36, just two short of the school-record.
"We have been really working on Christin's leadership in the libero role and she is starting to embrace it," Scott said. "She has every tool in her belt to be an All-American and I think she is finally starting to believe it."
Heather Leavitt also added 15 kills and 25 digs for 17th double-double in 27 matches.
Delaney McCraney also had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs.
PLNU came out slow dropping the first set but responded by winning the next three to complete their perfect home PacWest record and keep their hopes of making the NCAA West Regional alive.
In order to even have a chance at playoffs, PLNU will need to defeat Azusa Pacific next Saturday, Nov. 15 in the season finale for both teams.
"I don't know the last time Point Loma has won a match at Azusa Pacific," said Scott. "None of our student-athletes or coaches has ever won a match at APU, so I am hoping that will keep us very hungry this week. The playoffs are out of our hands and all we can do is focus on this last match."
This was the final home match for three PLNU seniors;
Delaney McCraney,
mcKensey Wise and
Alyssa Dwyer.
