PLNU gets second straight sweep at Seaside Invite

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Point Loma volleyball picked up its second straight sweep at the Seaside Invitational with a 3-0 win over Saginaw Valley State in its first match Saturday (Sept. 6).

The victory moved PLNU to 2-1 on the season and gave SVSU (3-1) its only loss at the Seaside Invitational.

Heather Leavitt again paced the Sea Lions with 11 kills, and just one error, as she hit .385 for the match. Delaney McCraney also added 11 kills and three service aces to go along with nine digs. Savannah Wedemeyer handed out 37 assists while Briana Vieth and Christin Fisher tied for the team-lead with 11 digs apiece.

The defense for the Sea Lions was maybe the most important factor to them earning the victory. It held SVSU to just a .120 hitting percentage with only 25 kills (and 14 hitting errors) over the three-set match. No member of the Cardinals had more than seven kills, and only one student-athlete hit over .200.

"(Saginaw Valley State) came out with a lot of fire power in their first three matches so we made it a focus to really emphasize the defensive intensity," said Scott.

Point Loma executed on that point of emphasis right away in the first set by hitting .269 and holding SVSU to just a .077 hitting percentage en route to the 25-15 open set victory. That trend would continue over the next two sets as PLNU outhit the Cardinals in each set and finished with 20 more kills in the match.

"We are still not where we want to be (offensively) or where we know we need to be but we are getting there," noted Scott who also talked about playing the four matches in two days at the Seaside Invitational.

"Every team is tired here; that is a wash," Scott explained. "The hardest thing is being able to mentally delete the last match and get focused on the next one."

Point Loma will be back in action tonight at approximately 8:30 p.m. against Cal State Dominguez Hills to close out the 2014 Seaside Invitational.
