Point Loma closes out Seaside Invite with a win

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Point Loma made a habit of defeating California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents in the late matches at the Seaside Invitational. Last night it was a sweep over Cal State Monterey Bay and tonight the Sea Lions took down Cal State Dominguez Hills in four sets 25-23, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-16.

This was the third straight win for PLNU (3-1) and sent the Toros home at 1-3.

Alyssa Dwyer dominated the middle as she hit an incredible .607 with 19 kills and just two errors in 28 attempts. Heather Leavitt added 15 kills and two service aces. Delaney McCraney had her most efficient match of the season as she hit .348 with 10 kills. Christin Fisher also chipped in with 15 digs and three aces, while Savannah Wedemeyer dished out 48 assists.

The offense and defense finally came together in this match. Sea Lion fans were able to see the offense firing on all cylinders in the first set as they had 21 kills and just two errors to hit .422 as a team. However, CSUDH was also on fire offensively as it hit .405 in the opening set.

This is when the Sea Lions' defense stepped up. They would hold the Toros to hitting percentages of .172, .000 and -.032 over the next three sets to take the match in four.

"When we got through that first set we made it a point of emphasis that we have to control the net on the defensive side," said head coach Jonathan Scott. "Our defense has been a point of emphasis all week and all preseason but this group is now able to play with each other in a competitive setting so now we really get to see our strengths and weakness."

The Sea Lions will be in for another challenge next week when it goes to California Baptist for the GNAC/PacWest Crossover. PLNU will play four schools from the GNAC over the three-day tournament.

"The teams we will play are very good," said Scott. "It will be a good test and good challenge to see how we compare."
