The NCAA West RegionalThe Point Loma volleyball team earned the No. 7 seed in the NCAA West Regional and will face No. 2 seed, Western Washington, on Friday, Dec. 4 at 3:30 p.m. (PST) in Anchorage, Alaska. The Sea Lions earned the No. 8 seed as an at-large selection in the West Regional after going 20-9 during the regular season and finishing tied for second in the PacWest with a 14-6 record.

A look at the Sea LionsPoint Loma closed out its regular season by winning 12 of its final 13 games to climb from seventh to second in the PacWest standings. PLNU finished tied with California Baptist for second place with a 14-6 record. Point Loma is pacing the PacWest conference in assists (13.32) and kills (14.10). PLNU ranks 11th in NCAA Division II in assists per set and 18th in kills. Point Loma is also 28th nationally in both digs (18.16) and hitting percentage (.236). The Sea Lions have also used their serves to their advantage. They rank second in the PacWest with 1.45 aces per set and are giving up the least amount of aces (0.9). PLNU is the only team allowing less than an ace per set.
Savannah Wedemeyer has extended her lead in the PacWest assist category over the Sea Lions' winning run. She is averaging 11.09 aces per set and leads the PacWest by nearly half an assist per set.
Heather Leavitt is pacing the PacWest with 4.77kills per set (more on her below).
Bree Vieth finished the regular season as the PacWest leader with 48 aces. Wedemeyer is second in the aces category with 0.39 aces per set.
Bethany Mandon is also ranked seventh in the PacWest, but for blocks with 0.91 per set.
Christin Fisher is fourth in the conference with 4.84 digs per set, followed by Leavitt (3.63) and
Kelli LeClair (3.04) in 13th and 17th place, respectively.
Leavitt named PacWest Player of the YearHeather Leavitt was named the 2015 PacWest Volleyball Player of the Year by the league's coaches. The senior outside hitter is the first Sea Lion student-athlete to ever earn PacWest Player of the Year honors. Leavitt was voted player of the year by the league's coaches after pacing the PacWest and ranking third in the NCAA with 4.77 kills per set. The Mesa, Ariz., native had a .264 hitting percentage and averaged 3.63 digs per set to rank 13th and 14th in the PacWest, respectively. She posted double-doubles in 23 of 29 matches and finished the regular season with double-figure kills in all but one match. She was the first Sport Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week on the season after averaging 5.27 kills and 4.07 digs per set in four PLNU wins at the Seaside Invitational.

Savannah Wedemeyer connected once again, this time off the court, as each was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-West Region First Team on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
Three earn All-PacWest honorsJoining
Heather Leavitt on the All-PacWest team were
Savannah Wedemeyer and
Bethany Mandon. Leavitt was the lone first team selection, while Wedemeyer earned second team honors and Mandon grabbed third team.
A look at the VikingsWestern Washington went 23-5 during the regular season and finished second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a 15-3 record. Four of the five WWU losses came against teams that are playing in NCAA Regionals. The Vikings enter the NCAA West Regional having won seven of their last eight matches. Leading the Vikings is Abby Phelps, who was named the GNAC Freshman of the Year. WWU also fellow All-GNAC selections in outside hitter Rachel Roeder and middle blocker Kayleigh Harper. Opposite hitter Jennica McPherson also earned an honorable mention. Roeder led the team with 3.19 kills per set, and Phelps was right behind her with 3.04 kills per set.
Meeting againThis will be the second meeting of the season between the Sea Lions and Vikings. The two teams met at the GNAC/PacWest Crossover Challenge in Ellensburg, Wash., on Sept. 12 and the Vikings won all three sets against PLNU (25-21, 27-25 and 25-15). WWU leads the all-time series 2-1.
