A look at the Sea Lions
Point Loma (8-14, 5-9 PacWest) is coming off of one of their toughest weeks of the season playing the top two teams in the conference, California Baptist and Azusa Pacific, who have both been ranked nationally this season with CBU remaining undefeated. The team is coming off of two straight-set losses to these top-tier programs and they look to bounce back this week with opportunities against the Hawks and the Trailblazers.
The team is young and the freshmen have garnered much deserved recognition.
Holley Persson has earned three PacWest Freshman of the Week honors and has also earned one Defender of the Week honor. Persson is leading the conference in digs per set at 5.92, a full dig per set over the second ranked player. She also ranks nationally at 15
th in digs per set.
Julia Malinas has also garnered two PacWest Freshman of the Week awards. She is ranked second in the conference for aces per set at .49 and leads the team in kills per set at 2.58. Sophomore setter,
Cara Keturakis has paced the team this season and recorded her second-career triple double in a loss to Concordia-Irvine with 10 kills, 37 assists, and 12 digs. Keutrakis ranks second in the conference for assists per set with 9.08.
A look at the Hawks
Holy Names (0-21, 0-12 PacWest) is still looking for their first win of the season and are last in the PacWest standings. The team has struggled thus far and has only won four sets on the season. Summer Williams leads the team with 2.01 kills per set followed by Sierra Allen who has 1.66 kills per set. Daisy Valladares leads the defense with 3.28 digs per set.
A look at the Trailblazers
Dixie State (9-12, 7-6) has struggled with consistency this season and ranks seventh in the PacWest. The team won in straight sets over Dominican at home, but lost a tough five-set match when they played the Penguins on the road. The Sea Lions stole a game from the Trailblazers in Utah, despite DSU looking like the better team. The team will face No. 3 California Baptist on Friday night before taking on PLNU on Saturday looking to avoid a season sweep. Lauren Gammell leads the team with 2.13 kills per set and 1.04 blocks per set, she ranks seventh in the conference for blocks per set. Sid Brandon sits at seventh in the conference for digs per set at 4.48. Kayla Chapman is hitting .311 on the season, good enough for fifth in the conference.
