AZUSA, Calif. -- The NAIA No. 8-ranked Sea Lions fell for the seventh time in eight games on Thursday, losing at Azusa Pacific 9-3. Point Loma Nazarene is now 10-10 overall, 5-8 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
The Cougars drew first blood, scoring single runs in the first and second innings. The Sea Lions took the lead with a three-run fourth highlighted by a two-run single from shortstop Clinton Harwick and a RBI single from second baseman Tyler Kuehl.
That would end the day's scoring for PLNU, however. Azusa Pacific pushed across two runs in the home half of the fourth to retake the lead. The Cougars tacked on a run in the fifth, three more in the seventh and one more in the eighth for the 9-3 final score.
The Sea Lions had their chances, collecting 10 hits but stranding 10 runners over nine frames of GSAC action. Kuehl had two hits as did DH Scott Stidham. Centerfielder Allen Boyer was 3-for-4.
APU rapped out 16 hits paced by a three-hit effort from Johnathan Erb. Matt Kimmel drove in three runs.
Point Loma starter Chris Gonzales (1-2) allowed four earned runs on seven hits in four innings of work. Kellen Stewart and Oliver Craig each toed the rubber in relief.
Morgan Wynne improved to 2-1 after a five-inning start for the Cougars (14-11, 7-7).
The Sea Lions, which are just 2-6 on the road, will try to get back on the winning track when they host APU for a twinbill on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
