PLNU Wins Behind Five-Run Sixth

Sea Lions win non-conference tilt over SDCC 8-3

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 8-3 non-conference win over San Diego Christian Tuesday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.

The Sea Lions improved to 24-17 with the win while the Hawks fell to 6-31.

Three SDCC errors helped PLNU take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Hawks answered with three in their next at bat, capped by RBIs from Greg Joseph, Christopher Pascal and Mike Bando.

The score remained 3-2 until the Sea Lions went to bat in the sixth. Scott Stidham started the ball rolling with a single to right and later scored on double from Edgar Molina. Rashad Taylor followed with a long double to plate Molina and give PLNU a 4-3 advantage.

Though the second out was recorded Point Loma wasn't done yet. Shain Stoner was intentionally walked with Jack Diamond coaxing a walk to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Alec Martinez worked the count and walked on a close, full-count pitch to plate Taylor.

The Hawks decided to make a pitching change but Allen Boyer greeted reliever Brandon James with a two-run double to make the score 7-3 in PLNU's favor.

Point Loma added an insurance run in the eighth after Tyler Kuehl walked with the bases loaded.

Sea Lion starter Garrett Levsen lasted just two innings and gave up three runs on four hits. Chris Gonzales (3-3) earned the win after four hitless frames on the hill. Gonzales fanned six batters. Josh Dexheimer took over in the seventh and blanked the Hawks for two frames.

Stoner moved from his infield position to toe the rubber in the ninth. His first pitch was an inauspicious one: a hit batter. But he settled down to close out the Hawks and the day's play.

SDCC starter Joey Schumer was the losing pitcher, falling to 0-1 after yielding seven runs, six earned in 5.2 innings.

PLNU will host SDCC for another non-conference tilt on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
