HEMET, Calif. -
Zane Keith and
Nate Wanken both placed in the top 5 at the California State Intercollegiate Tourney to lead the Point Loma men's golf team to a fourth place finish on the Diamond Valley Golf Course.
Keith paced the Sea Lions in the third round with a -2 (70) and a 220 overall (+4) to finish third amongst all individuals. Wanken came in tied for fifth with a +5, 221. He was consistent throughout the tournament with scores of 73-74-74.
As a team, PLNU placed fourth with a combined score of 894 (+34). The Sea Lions posted their best team score in the third round with a +3 (291).
Rounding out the individual scoring for the Sea Lions was
Cole Reese in a tie for 18th place (+9, 225), and
Brent Hamilton and
Oscar Casillas who both tied for 25th at +14.
"We played will in the last round and I am happy to see us finish strong," said PLNU head coach Zach Ponder. "We accomplished our goal of playing well and hopefully we did well enough to qualify for the NCCAA championships.
"It was good to get that first tournament of the year under our belts," Ponder added.
Cal State San Marcos won the team competition at +19. Shane Favinger, of Holy Names, took home the individual title with a +1 (217).
The men's golf team will return to action on Oct. 15th at the Cal State San Marcos Invitational.
