Oscar Casillas shot a 3-over, 75 in the final round of the Cal State San Marcos Invite on Tuesday (Feb. 5) to finish tied for eighth on the Shadowridge Country Club course. The Sea Lions finished tied for seventh with a 925 (+61).
"Oscar hit the ball really well today," said PLNU head coach
Zack Ponder. "His iron game was good and he was mentally prepared for the day."
Zane Keith gave the Sea Lions another top 20 finisher as he posted the fourth-lowest score amongst all individuals in the tournament during the third round with a 2-under, 70. He moved up 13 spots in the final round to finish tied for 15th at the CSU San Marcos Invite with a 9-over, 225.
"Zane straightened everything out today and ended the tournament very strong," added Ponder.
The Sea Lions also got qualifying scores from
Jack Koeller who finished tied for 43rd with a 19-over, 235, and
Nate Wanken with a 27-over, 237. Due to a family emergency PLNU only had four student-athletes play in the tournament.
The Sea Lions' squad was one of four teams to lower their score in each round. PLNU posted a 28-over, 316 in the opening round and a 19-over, 307 in the second before registering a 302 (+14) in the final round. The 302 for Point Loma on Tuesday tied for the fourth lowest team score in the third round.
Oklahoma City won the team competition by six strokes over host Cal State San Marcos with a 885 (298-292-295, +21). Jake Knapp dominated the individual competition, winning the meet by seven strokes (208, -8).
The men's golf team won't play again until Mar. 4 when it goes to Santa Clarita, Calif., to play in The Master's College Spring Invitational.
