Hall of Fame
This three-time NAIA first team All-American is one of the best student-athletes to ever pick up a tennis racquet for the Sea Lions. Ashley Strimple had an immediate and lasting impact on the women’s tennis program as she excelled in both singles and doubles play (2004-07).
She captured multiple Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles titles and also reached the championship match in doubles. She has a career singles record of 68-27 (.716 winning percentage) and those 68 wins rank her fifth in Point Loma history.
Strimple also posted 80 doubles wins during her four letter-winning seasons, which also rank her fifth on the school’s all-time list. During her junior season, Strimple paired with Andrea Montoya to go 23-5 (.821%) in doubles play. That winning percentage moved the duo into fourth place in the school’s record books, where they still remain today.
It was not just all about the individual or doubles wins for Strimple, as she was also an excellent teammate and provided consistency at the No. 1 spot. She helped lead Point Loma to a 61-35 record (.635%) during her tenure. In her freshman season, Strimple led the Sea Lions to the NAIA Region II title with upsets of No. 2 seed Azusa Pacific in the semis and No. 1 seed Vanguard in the finals. In each of Strimple’s four season the Sea Lions advanced to the NAIA Tennis Championships in Mobile, Alabama, where they earned a victory each season, including reaching the quarterfinals in 2004.
Strimple was also named to the All-Golden State Athletic Conference team in each season and was a four-time all-district selection. She was twice named the Sea Lions’ Most Valuable Player. She also helped PLNU earn GSAC team scholar honors in 2005 and 2006 with team GPAs over 3.25.
Strimple would go on to graduate from Point Loma in three and a half years with an undergraduate degree in Managerial and Organizational Communications (2007). She married former men’s tennis player Jonathan Bowman and the couple had their first child in October. The couple still remains active in the tennis community. This summer they paired up to win mixed doubles at the prestigious Tracy Austin tournament.
