Kenton Leach has been the most important entry in the W. Shelburne Brown Golf Classic for over a decade. When the tournament threatened to swallow up Sam and Rick Mallicoat because of the huge task of hand entering the scores for this mega event—Leach came to the rescue.
His creative abilities were made known during his student days. It was Leach who solved the concession stand mystery of how to get syrup residue out of the lines by running hot water through an empty Coke canister pressurized by the CO2 tank. Not even the Coke people had thought of that. He helped out again when the campus electricians decided that the baseball field scoreboard was shot and would have to be replaced. There wasn’t any money for a new scoreboard in the budget and when Leach heard about the dilemma he took a look at it and fixed in less than an hour. The board lasted another two years.
Leach wrote and maintained the computer program making all the adjustments across the years for the Golf Classic scoring system. The composite scores, adjusted for handicaps, the teams placed in proper order of finish and then flighted—all of this was computed before dinner and the award presentations were always on time. It’s an incredible feat and service which Leach, alongside his father Dwain, have made happen each year without flaw. It has been said by many participating golfers that the Shelburne Brown Golf Classic is the finest run tournament (at least from the scoring perspective) that can be found in San Diego.
Leach has also served on the golf committee to help with the polishing and refinement of procedures and policies. With three other PLNU graduates, Leach was a key founder of the Neverhood Company. Their charges is to create video games for Steven Speilberg’s Dreamworks Interactive.
The Award for Meritorious Service was presented to Leach by Bob Brower.
