Don Black epitomized what PC/Point Loma athletes are about during his baseball playing days. He was a Christian gentleman who consistently exhibited qualities of loyalty and selflessness. This usually meant pitching one game of a Saturday double header and playing first base or the outfield in the other. He took on the role of reliever during the week.

Black was a power pitcher in his earlier seasons at PC. He damaged his arm and was forced to pitch in pain much of his career. Despite the discomfort, he was always ready to “lay it on the line” when it was his turn to pitch. He held the Pasadena record for most seasons wins, best ERA and career wins until these record were surpassed by Marty Decker six years later. Black was also a superb hitter throughout his career. He held the home run record for several years.

Black’s all-star qualities were evidenced by the awards he garnered: All-District recognition and Honorable Mention All-American. Black had an extraordinary quality when victory was in sight—there was just no beating him! When a game was on the line with a runner in scoring position he would be the top choice to be at the plate.

What a dream player he would have been at the Point Loma ballpark where the right field fence is 50 feet closer than at Pasadena.

Black went on to become the general manager of Long Beach Redwood Company and married Becky. They had three daughters: Penny, Flavia and Candice.

The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Black by Jess Walling.
