For anyone who has followed men’s soccer at Point Loma, the name Mike Farrand immediately leaps to their mind. As a senior he was selected Most Outstanding Male Athlete crossing all sports, because in soccer he has done something no other player before or since has achieved. Farrand was selected for the District Three First Team all four years at PLNC. Dr. Leon Kugler, his coach at the time, is quick to talk about Farrand calling him an outstanding competitor who models ideal sportsmanship. Kugler says that Ferrand was the team leader who took his role as captain seriously. His presence on the Point Loma soccer teams brought recognition of quality by fans, peers and opponents.
After six years away from the program, Point Loma again called upon Farrand’s help to sustain the quality of soccer competition and he returned as coach. His former teammate, Tim Hall thought he was the perfect choice:
I am impressed to see how Mike is adding to the life of others, especially our youth by giving back those skills in the coaching arena. Mike teaches the youth much more than soccer. He teaches the principals of life because he himself is a Christian man of integrity.
Farrand settled into a home in San Diego while he was coaching with his wife Kristen Finkbeiner and their children: Jarrik, Hadli and Keilin.
The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Farrand by Jim Bond.
