Marlin Wells was one of the first “big time” recruits for Pasadena College baseball when the sport was establishing itself in the early ‘60’s. In 1963 Marlin enrolled at PC following an outstanding junior college All-American career at New Mexico Military Institute in his hometown, Roswell, New Mexico. Marlin, helped the Crusaders begin a long successful road of attracting quality pitchers.
Marlin was a great competitor who could be counted on for a quality outing every time he took the mound. He would have starred in any era on any Pasadena/PLNU team. During his time at the college, Marlin led the Crusaders setting records in wins and innings pitched both seasons. Marlin was the staff work horse finding himself in nearly 40% of the team’s total innings.
Marlin finished his two year career with over 200 innings, an ERA near 3.0, 125 strikeouts winning more than half the teams total wins and one of the best walk to strikeout ratios in school history. He earned NAIA All-District 3 honors both seasons at Pasadena when there were more than 20 teams in the District.
Marlin not only “fit the bill” on the field, he was a perfect fit off the field as well. A true gentleman, he personified the type of athlete that lived the school’s mission. After college, Marlin married Kathleen Adams, also a PC grad from Roswell. They have two boys. Rich who played for Grand Canyon is currently an associate minister. He lives with wife, Amber and children Jacob, Landry, Olivia and Aliya in Phoenix. Greg, who pitched for the Crusaders here in San Diego, is an investment real estate broker. He lives with his wife, Felicia and daughters Emma and Allison in San Diego.
Following college, Marlin served four years in the army where he reached the rank of Captain and was decorated with the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters and the American Spirit Honor Award spending time in Germany and Viet Nam.
Today the Wells’ live in Roswell where Marlin has a distinguished career in insurance and financial advising. Marlin has made and is making an indelible impression on the city’s business community and Christian associates. He has been a board member or chairperson for the Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Council, the Roswell Symphony Foundation, United Way, Rotary International, NM Military Institute Foundation and Appointed Roswell City Counselor. He has received the Community Service Volunteer Award, Sertoma Service to Mankind Award and teaches weekly business men’s bible study.
Marlin, you have continued to bring honor and recognition to your Alma Mater in a life of quality contributions to many lives. Tonight, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you as a member of the Point Loma Nazarene University Athletic Hall of Fame in the category of baseball athlete. Congratulations.
