Early in Coach Ben Foster's career, one of the most important players he recruited was Barrie Elliott. Under a demanding coach requiring consistency in performance, Elliott became a pillar of strength for two years in which he saw the Crusaders reach 23 wins each of those seasons.

Elliott was an outstanding basketball player. Coming to Point Loma from junior college, he was able to spend only two years as a Crusader, but he made the most of his time. He was twice selected All-GSAC, twice team MVP, twice all-district, the winner of the Meguiar Outstanding Male Athlete Award, and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and an NCCAA All-American. He led his team to two consecutive conference championships and to the NAIA District Three finals twice. Coach Foster called him one of the best all-around forwards that he has ever coached. In the words of his teammate Dale Best, “ Barrie was one of the finest basketball players to ever play for the Crusaders.” He averaged just over 12 ppg and 6 rpg.

Elliott eventually settled with his wife Jean and their two sons, Kevin and Terry in Carlsbad where he opened Elliott Insurance Agency. He also worked with the CSA and served as a men’s basketball liaison.

The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Elliott by Jim Bond.
