Ed Riley held numerous pitching records 39 years after he last took the hill as a Crusader. A magnificent left-handed hurler, Riley pitched for Pasadena College from 1961 to 1963 and was undoubtedly the finest Crusader pitcher up to that point at PC. Riley also played basketball for two seasons (1962-63), but made his primary mark on the program through baseball.
By 2002, his long line of accomplishments could still be found in the school record book in 10 places. As the 1962 team MVP, Riley set the all-time mark for innings pitched that season with 141. His 350.1 IP in a career stood at second all-time and he was also second in wins in a single season (10) and third all-time with 22 victories. A power pitcher, Riley was twice listed in the top-10 strikeouts in a season, 96 in 1961 and 88 in 1962. With 257 career strikeouts, Riley was third all-time and fourth in all-time ERA at 2.59. The only reason Riley doesn’t hold more school records is because players of his era has to spend one season on the freshman team.
Nevertheless, the school was privileged enough to have Riley compete on the varsity squad for three seasons. Riley was a consistent performer on sometimes inconsistent teams. He could always be counted on to give the Crusaders his best. His most memorable performance came on March 18, 1961 when he pitched a no-hitter against Chapman College .
The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Riley by Bob Brower.
