As Pasadena College’s fledgling intercollegiate athletics program endeavored to improve and expand in the late ‘40s, a multi-talented athlete emerged on the scene and did more than his share to see that the Crusader program not only grew, but was extremely successful in the process. In the time before small colleges has any real opportunities to compete nationally or receive All-American honors, PC was blessed with two fine athletes who may have been able to achieve both—Chalmer Cartwright and David Whitcomb.

A superb high hurdler, Whitcomb ran the 110 highs in 15.1 in 1950, a Crusader record that stood for 30 years. As a freshman he participated on PC’s undefeated football team. He was also a four-year starter on the Crusader varsity basketball team where his rebounding and scoring were instrumental in four-consecutive winning seasons, including 75 victories in 109 games.

As if that weren’t enough, Whitcomb played on the number one court for the PC tennis team. He was one of the first Crusader athletes to compete at the prestigious Ojai Tournament. After graduating, Whitcomb worked in PC’s education department and also took on the head coaching position of the tennis team. He went on to become a professor of psychology at Cal State Long Beach.

The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Whitcomb by Amos Hamilton.
