When Rose Lyon came to Pasadena College as a freshman in 1955, the Crusader women competed in two sports on an intercollegiate level: basketball and softball. Lyon excelled at both and quickly established herself as the top Crusader female athlete. In her sophomore and junior years she led the women cagers to successive undefeated seasons. Her 24-point effort in the playoff game against Upland in 1959 secured a second consecutive championship. She completed her basketball career in 1960 by averaging 15 ppg as Pasadena won seven of its eight games.
As effective as she was a player, Lyon proved to be equally competent as a coach. She coached teams in basketball, softball and tennis for Pasadena from 1960 through 1964. Her basketball team in 1961 was undefeated in her first year as head coach. In her last year at PC, the basketball team claimed the championship.
Following her playing and coaching career at PC, Lyon taught at Smith College in Massachusetts and Southern California University. As Dr. Lyon, she also headed the physical education department at Cal State Fresno.
The Awards for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete and Coach were presented to Lyon by Sam Mallicoat.
