In the early years of Pasadena College athletics, stabilizing the program did not come easily. This was not a condition specific to Pasadena. At the time, other colleges were experiencing similar difficulties. It was hard to differentiate between the cause and effect. It was hard to organize sports when most schools were wavering in sponsorship. Development and stability came more through the individuals within the programs.
Perhaps no one was more instrumental in helping to achieve direction for the women’s programs at Pasadena than Bonnie Whitcomb Cervine. From 1948 to 1952, Cervine was an outstanding tennis and basketball player for the Crusaders. In her four years of basketball, she experienced three different coaches. Following her playing days and a one year absence, Cervine returned to the college to coach and teach physical education. She had already had experience coaching at the prep level during her playing days.
As a Pasadena College coach, Cervine guided the basketball team from 1954-56, the softball team from 1954-56 and the volleyball team in 1955. She also took on women’s tennis in 1956. Cervine’s efforts were indeed significant in bringing quality to the Pasadena College Women’s Athletics.
Cervine was presented with the Honorary Award by Merlene Ritchie.
