Shane Peterson was an outstanding track and field athlete for PLNU from 1996-2000. Shane is, according to his former coach Jerry Arvin, “The best all-around athlete I ever coached and possibly the best athlete in the history of Point Loma Nazarene University track and field.” Shane’s accomplishments back up that statement. He was a five-time NAIA All-American, winning three National Championships in the javelin, a silver medal in the shot put and a silver medal in the decathlon.

In addition, Shane was all-conference 21 times, winning six Golden State Athletic Conference Championships. In 2000, his national meet winning throw of 232 feet, 3 inches qualified Shane for the 2002 U.S. Olympic track and field team trials. Shane’s coaches named him the Most Valuable Field Athlete in each of his four seasons and in 1999 he was selected the Meguiar Memorial Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year.

Shane graduated from PLNU in May 2000 with a degree in Physical Education and in 2004 with an M.A. from Azusa Pacific. Since then he has worked at PLNU as a teacher and as Coach Jerry Arvin’s assistant on the track and field team as they with some 75-80 athletes annually strive to sustain the Point Loma track legacy, Coach Arvin calls Shane his “right-hand man.”

Shane and his wife, Kyrstal, a former PLNU track and field All-American, live in San Diego and are expecting their first child soon.

Shane, it is with great pleasure that we induct you as a member of the Point Loma Nazarene University Athletic Hall of Fame as a track and field Athlete. Congratulations.
