The continuing success of the women’s basketball team at Pasadena College in the ‘60s was due principally to the Crusaders’ outstanding center, Joan Cathey. A phenomenal scorer, Cathey’s preponderance of two-pointers enabled PC’s women cagers to win virtually every game during her career.

As a freshman, Cathey averaged 27ppg and the Crusaders finished 7-1. In 1960, the team was a perfect 7-0 and Cathey, who poured in 25 points per contest, scored more points than PC’s entire opposing teams’ total. After taking two years off, Cathey returned to the team to finish out her eligibility.

The Reverend Cathey went on to minister at the Longview Community Church in Longview, WA. In 1979-80 she received the “Preacher of the Year” award from Fuller Theological Seminary, the first time it was ever awarded to a woman.

The award for Outstanding Achievement as an Athlete was presented to Cathey by Carroll Land.
