The men’s basketball team won 100 games during the four seasons Greg Lanthier played for Point Loma in the early and mid 1980s. Lanthier is second all-time with 669 assists and ranks third and fourth among seasonal assist leaders with 282 and 231 respectively. But his play was about much more than statistics. Lanthier was all about winning and doing whatever it took to help his team accomplish that goal. As a point guard, he provided the team with leadership and inspiration. His smart style of play always made his teammates better, his team more efficient and helped place Point Loma in the best position to win. As his playing increased, so did the number of Crusader victories. During Lanthier’s four years on the hardwood, the team won 20, 22, 25 and 27 games.

“He didn’t overwhelm teams with athleticism, he just beat them with skill, mental toughness and drive—he was a genuine player,” said former coach, Ben Foster. “Greg was a clutch performer who played his best in tough situations. In “crunch time” he could always be counted on to make the key assist, basket, rebound or defensive play.”

The coaches in the league and district respected and appreciated him as a player by selecting him to All-District and All-League teams.

But his basketball career didn’t end as a Crusader. After graduating from Point Loma, Lanthier became a very successful coach, winning two CIF Championships at Vista High School and went on to coaching at UCSD.

Lanthier was a contributing pitcher on the Crusader baseball teams throughout his career as well, even though the basketball team success in post-season play kept him out of baseball competition nearly half of each season.

The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Lanthier by Bob Brower.
