Hall of Fame
Axelsson was a member of the Point Loma track & field team from 1980-84 where he competed for legendary coach Jim Crakes and was a dominant thrower. He graduated from PLNU with school records in the shot put, discus and hammer. To this day, his name still sits atop the record board outside the entrance to the PLNU Track for the longest throws in the discus and the shot put, two records that are likely to never be broken for the Point Loma men's track & field program.
His success extended beyond The Point as Axelsson garnered other awards at the national level. He competed at the NAIA National Championships every year, excelling in the hammer, discus, and shot put. He finished in the top 4 of the discus all four seasons, including capturing the national championship as a sophomore with a throw of 183-9, which was nearly nine feet further than his closest opponent. This would not be the only national championship Axelsson would earn. As a senior, he won the hammer throw over a competitor from Azusa Pacific who had previously set the NAIA record in the event.
