His former coach, Jerry Arvin , called Sean Martin the “backbone of the track teams” and remembers him as “not only an athletic leader, but also a spiritual leader.” For three seasons from 1995-1997, Martin competed for the Crusader track and field team. During those years, he exemplified the meaning of a true student/athlete by representing Point Loma in the highest manner on and off the field.

Selected for the Maguiar Award for Most Outstanding Male Athlete, Martin also earned NAIA Academic All-American honors that season. He was a performing NAIA All-American in the 400m hurdles with a second-place finish at the national meet. Earlier in 1996 at the GSAC Championships, Martin took home first place finishes in the 400m hurdles, triple jump and was a member of the conference champion 4x400m relay team. In 1997, he repeated as the conference champion in the 400m hurdles while finishing third in the 100m hurdles. Martin went on to finish in seventh place in the 400m hurdles at nationals.

“Sean Martin is one of the finest athletes I have had the privilege to coach,” said Arvin. “ He was such a pleasure to coach for three seasons that after graduation, I wanted him to be one of my assistants, and he was for two years. Sean was a self-motivator and pushed himself to be the best track athlete he could be. However, his greatest gift was to make everyone he ran with and came into contact with a better athlete and person. He made me look like a very good coach. I’m happy and excited that Sean joins me and the other track and field athletes who have been inducted into the Point Loma Hall of Fame.”

The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Martin by Bob Brower.
