For 35 years Sam Mallicoat gave generously of himself to Pasadena and Point Loma athletics. From his freshman year at PC in 1949 when he coached women’s basketball to 1984, Mallicoat energetically, enthusiastically and efficiently served Crusader athletics in a variety of functions.

A versatile athlete, Mallicoat lettered in varsity basketball and baseball at Pasadena before an injury and his marriage prior to his junior year curtailed his intercollegiate activities. He nevertheless remained one of the top athletes on campus, winning in the all-school tennis tournament and receiving intramural awards in badminton and table tennis. He also found time to coach the women’s basketball team for two years, and in his second season, the team was 4-1.

Mallicoat taught in the public school system for 31 years, but remained active in his support of Crusader athletics. When he relocated to San Diego , Mallicoat served on the Crusader Club for 20 years—four times as president. Mallicoat organized the two alumni golf tournaments in conjunction with Homecoming and the Alumni Banquet for over 20 years. In 1983, he masterminded the Shelburne Brown Memorial Golf Tournament in which better than $6,000 was raised for Crusader athletics.

The award for Meritorious Service was presented to Mallicoat by Ed Davis.
