For as long as women’s basketball had existed at Point Loma College nobody had scored more points or grabbed more rebounds than Rene Tuchscher. The forward came to PLNC in 1978 after an inauspicious high school career at Bonita Vista.

She “blossomed” immediately at Point Loma and proved to be a remarkable model of consistency and excellence during her four years as a starter for the Crusaders. Great quickness, a deadly mid-range jumper and a desire to excel enabled Tuchscher to realize a competitive level few have achieved at Point Loma.

Tuchscher, who missed only two games in four years because of a broken hand, was the team MVP her sophomore, junior and senior year. Her value was further evidenced by the success of the teams on which she played. The Lady Crusaders posted a winning record in each of her years, a combined total of 62 wins and 33 loses. She was the leading scorer and rebounder every year. Just 5’8” and 120 pounds , Tuchscher used her quickness and exceptional court sense to average nearly ten rebounds per game for her career, a truly remarkable accomplishment. Her skill and efficiency were duly noted by opposing coaches as Tuchscher received all-conference, all-district and all-region honors during her career.

Her pleasant, low-key demeanor often masked a relentless inner determination that allowed her to reach her potential. She was a classic leader by example.

Tuchscher went on to become a senior sales account executive for San Diego Harbor

The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Tuchscher by Dan Brown.
