John McGaffey began his collegiate baseball career at San Diego State , but quickly became disenchanted with the school and its baseball program and decided to transfer to Point Loma. McGaffey was an outstanding Christian gentleman and the move to Point Loma seemed appropriate, reviving his interest in school and baseball.

McGaffey played both center field and catcher and was named to the All-District Three team at each position. During his senior year he led all California collegiate players with 17 homeruns—a PLNU record that still stands today. McGaffey was a feared hitter because of his explosive power. He was an outstanding base runner as his 25 stolen bases in his senior year proves. McGaffry received Point Loma College ’s highest athletic award when he received the Meguiar Award in 1978-79.

He was drafted and signed by the California Angels where he had an outstanding rookie season. Contract disputes lead to his resignation and his hiring at the Polara engineering firm who had been waiting for him to take up his career in business management.

McGaffey is one of the best baseball players in Crusader history and his tremendous ability and desire led to many Crusader wins and individual accomplishments.

McGaffey and his wife Cindy settled in La Habra Heights , CA with their two children Krista and Brandon.

The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to McGaffy by Dale Best.
