Hall of Fame
“Surely there does not exist an individual more deserving of the honor of election to the PLNC Athletic Hall of Fame than Dr. Carroll B. Land,” said Jim Bond.
Carroll Land has molded and nurtured the Athletic Department at PLNC during the past 20 years as Athletic Director and served as baseball coach from 1961 to 1999.
As baseball coach he has produced some outstanding teams and many all-star players. His 1985-86 team won the NAIA District Three Championship. He has coached numerous All-American players and several of his players have signed professional baseball contracts. As the PLNC Athletic Director, his administrative skills and vision have brought growth and balance for men’s and women’s programs. Land is recognized for his local, regional, national and international leadership in intercollegiate sports.
“It’s is doubtful that any similar college has ever had a professor whose achievements in athletics were more significant or broader,” said Dr. Keith Pagan, a colleague. “His involvement is extraordinary for a faculty member in an institution such as this.”
His 11-year service on the NAIA National Executive Committee culminated in the presidency. He also spent 12 years as a member of the US Olympic Committee, was involved in the administration of the World University Games and helped coordinated the NAIA National Championships in many different sports. He was chairman of the Commission for Women’s Championships and also president of the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Land continued to serve at Point Loma Nazarene University as the athletic director through 2009. He resides in San Diego with his wife Barbara and they have two children: Brian and Cheree.
