Fred Jessee attended PC from1968 through 1971. He was recruited by the legendary coach Chalmer Cartwright. Fred carried a major load for four years for two Crusader teams: Basketball and Track. Playing freshman basketball effectively preparing for a varsity career and carrying the bulk of the scoring load for track and field, Fred was recognized as the Most Outstanding Freshman Athlete in 1968.

He competed routinely in 5, 6 or 7 events in each track meet scoring in each. It was a natural progression into the decathlon. The grueling ten events brought Fred the #1 ranking in NAIA District 3. Fred culminated his track career with an NAIA All American performance as a senior at Nationals placing 4th scoring 6399 points setting the school record in the decathlon.

As a junior, he had really hit his stride in basketball with a scoring average of 12.5 points per game and just over 11 rebounds per game. To quote former coach Myron Finkbeiner, “Fred was a team player and a coacher’s dream carrying a heavy load.”

Fred came to Pasadena College to study music. A decision to shift to PE opened a new door. There he met future wife, fellow PE major Sandra Young. Sandy is Athletic Director and volleyball coach at Northside Middle School in Cole, CA, near Sacramento. They have two sons, AC, who along with his wife will soon present Fred and Sandy with their first grandchild and Russ. They both reside in Northern California.

Fred continues to use his musical talents as a recording and church concert artist to the Glory of God. He also continues his track endeavor. Just last year he achieved All American again in the U.S. Masters program, placing 5th in the discus and 8th in the Javelin in the U.S. Fred is employed by Sino Source in the funeral industry covering Northern California and Southern Oregon.

It is with great pleasure we induct you into the Point Loma Nazarene University Athletic Hall of Fame as basketball and track athlete. Congratulations.
