Vern Nelson has been closely associated with Pasadena and Point Loma athletics since the early days of Pasadena basketball. His interest as a student in how the team performed transformed into action, which has created a lifetime loyalty to the school. Nelson served the basketball team in a variety of ways including his work as a volunteer scorekeeper, trainer, driver, timekeeper and in the sports information department. Nelson has also been a Crusader Club member, secretary, president and a leader in scholarship contributions. What has made these deeds even sweeter is Nelson’s humble spirit.

Though Nelson’s primary following has been basketball, his interests have certainly not been limited to one sport. He has been instrumental in the recruitment of tennis, baseball, soccer and track. He has consistently kept up with all sports and frequently attends both the home and away contests.

When the school moved it’s location to Point Loma, many witnessed a drop off in support of athletics, but Nelson met the challenge head on. His loyalty not only continued, but seemed to grow stronger. Through the first nine years in San Diego , Nelson drove from his home in El Monte , a 260 mile road trip, to voluntarily keep the clock at basketball games for the green and gold.

Nelson was presented with the Meritorious Service award by Deual Woods.
